▸ 91 Points – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (May 2024)

“All Grenache from three different soil types, made in concrete and matured in used demi-muids, the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Catarina marries faint cedar and vanilla shadings with black cherries and raspberries, although on one occasion the sample did seem a bit plummier and simple. Full-bodied, with a silky-velvety feel and a lingering finish, it's a strong effort from a challenging vintage. Tasted twice (once blind), with only slightly different impressions—the rating reflects the mid-point in my scores.”
Joe Czerwinski (May 2024)

▸ Dark ruby red with notes of ripe red fruits. ▸ Aromas of black cherry, menthol and dried herbs. It is a juicy and elegant single varietal Grenache with remarkably soft tannins. ▸ Why “Catarina”? – Catherine of Siena, Saint and Doctor of the Church, went to Avignon in 1376 as ambassador of the city of Florence. She persuaded Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome to relocate the Papacy back where it belonged. ▸ Catarina Rouge is produced from 60-year-old vines (average) from a blend of three different soil types: round pebbles, sand and limestone. The three plots are located in Colombis, Bois de la Ville and Grand Devès lieux-dits, near the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. ▸ The grapes of each plot are vinified separately. Depending on the vintage, part of the harvest is not destemmed. The juices are vinified using indigenous yeasts for 4 to 5 weeks in cement tanks. ▸ The aging is carried out in old French oak demi-muids for 12 months.

Food pairingsIts complexity and full-bodiedness make it a perfect complement to rich family dishes, especially those made with red meats.
