“Crushed red and black berry fruit on the nose with some wet earth and tar. Medium-bodied, lightly tarry and linear with some iron notes to close. Drink now.”–James Suckling (Oct 2023)
SPEC | Vintage 2021
▸ Deep ruby red. ▸ Notes of marasca cherry and a delicate spiciness on the nose are carried forward on a fresh, fine palate with flawless tannins. ▸ Elegant yet complex, and well-textured on the palate with a long mineral finish. Well-suited for long bottle aging. ▸ Matidia, who held the title of “Augusta”, was a member of Rome’s Antonine dynasty. She was the niece of Emperor Trajan and mother-in-law of Emperor Hadrian. ▸ Vines are at least 30 years old; grown in a east facing vineyard 500 meters above sea level where the soil is volcanic limestone. ▸ One-third of the grapes are dried (appassimento) before fermented. Part of the wine is aged in stainless-steel vats and part in cherry wood tonneaux for about 12 months.
Food pairingsLike the Cesanese Rosso, ‘Matidia’ pairs excellently with tomato-based and poultry dishes, as well as lamb or pork rib in a savoury sauce.
