Edetària
Our Story
Edetària is located in North-Eastern Spain in the region of Catalonia. It is in the wine region of Terra Alta DO. As the name implies, it is high up in the mountains where the climate and large diurnal temperature are conducive to crisp and refreshing wines while the el Mestral wind in the valley keeps humidity low thus protecting the vines from diseases. Edetària is named after “Via Edetana”, an ancient road built by the Romans that stretched between Torotosa and Zaragoza, passing through this region, and is probably when viticulture was introduced. Owner/winemaker, Joan Àngel Lliberia, Edetària’s heart and soul, started Edetària after studying Agricultural Engineering in Lleida, followed by stints in several French wineries. His passion for wine led him back to his origin to establish Edetària in 2003 with a goal of making wines that truly express the soil and the micro-climate of his vineyards. He realized the key to success is organic farming with minimal intervention, using indegenous yeasts, staying away from chemicals and additives, and so on-- well before these practice are generally embraced and systemtized into certification. Preparation for organic certification began in 2016; Edetaria is now certified organic.
