Quinta da Foz

Our Story

Quinta da Foz is located in Douro at the junction of river Pinhão and river Douro, thus the name 'Foz' (river mouth). The winery dates back to 1872 when it was founded by the Cálem family. But in 2014, Filipe Ferreira, a young winemaker from Dão saw the potential of this emblematic Douro winery and took over. Filipe combined the passion, energy, and modern techniques of his new team with the wisdom and tradition of the old to nurture Quinta da Foz to become a quality reference point of the region. The winery consists of a total of 20ha, half of which are planted with vines over 80 years old. Over 30 varieties are planted, with the predominant varieties being Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. Quinta do Covão: On October 5, 1985, the Gomes Ferreira family—Jorge, Maria das Dores, Lúcia, and Filipe—fulfilled a lifelong dream by acquiring Quinta do Covão, a project rooted in their love for the land and Maria das Dores’ nostalgic connection to her childhood in São Gião. Initially exploring apple orchards, their true passion lay in winemaking, a legacy passed down through generations. Filipe Ferreira, representing the family's second generation, chose to pursue this heritage with formal training in oenology and a deep connection to the countryside, leaving behind city life in Porto. With innovation and excellence as guiding principles, he introduced terraced vineyards to Dão, affectionately referring to them as “his girls.” Under his leadership and relentless dedication, Filipe now heads a dynamic team committed to producing exceptional wines while preserving the values and vision of Quinta do Covão for future generations.
